Dr. Marvalene Hughes Leadership Conference 2022 - "We are Resilient, We will Renew, We are Warrior Strong!"

Students will Check-in, show clear Daily Screening, turn in waivers, and get breakfast.

We will travel to Stockton area to participate in the Experiential Day events.

The course ranges from ground-level games and initiatives to exercises taking place high above the course floor using elements made from utility poles, ropes, and cables. The program provides adventure-learning experiences, challenging individuals to push beyond their perceived limits, work effectively with others, think creatively about problems, learn to trust, and have fun.

We will be going to Pixie Woods, part of San Joaquin County, and do various projects in preparation for a new area called Fairy Land that will open soon.

Those who were part of the morning Ropes Course will have lunch on site.

We will head back to the Turlock campus.

There will be a clothing activity to bring the conference to a close and certificates will be handed out to all attendees.

Conference attendees will check-in at the Stanislaus State Event Center. All participants will need to show green screens and proof of vaccination card (Non-Stanislaus students) and then will be eligible to check-in for the Leadership Conference.

We will welcome conference attendees to the conference, acknowledge the Land we are on and the Labor that has built our country, and provide an overview of the conference agenda.

President Ellen Junn will welcome all students to the 4th annual Dr. Marvalene Hughes Leadership Conference and share about President Emerita Dr. Marvalene Hughes, for which the conference is named.

Dr. Marvalene Hughes donates to fund this Leadership Conference each year as she is committed to our students' personal leadership development. She annually gives two Stanislaus State students who have attended the conference Leadership Awards of $500 each. Information on how to apply will be reviewed. In an effort to honor Dr. Marvalene Hughes, each year we take a picture of conference attendees to be framed and given to Dr. Marvalene Hughes in recognition of her handbook. All conference attendees will be invited to come to the stage for this group picture.

An overview of the Breakout sessions will be provided to conference attendees. Following the overview, participants will be have time to review the breakout options, travel to their selected breakout sessions, and take a short personal break prior to the session.

Track: Discovering the Leader in You
Learn how to make the best use of your time for studying, work, and fun through this interactive workshop. Great leaders at Stan State learn how to manage their life rather than allowing people or activities dictate their schedules. Gain the confidence you'll need to make time management choices that lead you towards fulfilling your goals and dreams.

Track: Leading through Diversity and Inclusion
We are all called to serve as inclusive leaders in our own environments and from our own background and experiences. In this session we will discuss what that looks like, dispel some myths about inclusion, and explore the positive impact of inclusion on organizations.

Track: Leadership Education and Community Leaders
Some see their accomplishments as their legacy or who they are. In this workshop you will learn that what you create, improve, or empower that last beyond you is your true legacy.

Track: Serving in and Leading Student Organizations
Take this opportunity to learn more in depth about what it takes to plan an event. You will learn steps such as the process of knowing which forms to fill out, creating reservations through 25live Pro and where to reach out for resources needed to effectively create these events as well. By learning these steps and following them allows for a quicker approval process. As we go through this presentation skills such as organization, leadership and resourcefulness will be learned.

Track: Leading through Diversity and Inclusion
Leading a group, a team, or even an activity can be challenging. However, sometimes leaders can make the experience even more challenging for the group by not taking the members into consideration as complete people. In this session, we will talk about the importance of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in being an effective leader.

Track: Leadership Education and Community Leaders
Volunteering is good for you, your career, and your community. Serving as a volunteer will give you the opportunity to explore leadership opportunities and network with others who share interest in your career of choice. You will learn how you can make volunteering work for you and your community. We'll explore the value of volunteering, how to find volunteer opportunities wherever you are, and how to build your resume through volunteerism. Volunteering keeps you in regular contact with others and helps you develop a solid support system, which in turn protects you against stress and depression when you're going through challenging times.

Track: Discovering the Leader in You
There are two main mindsets we can navigate life with: growth and fixed. With the right mindset and hard work, your potential is unlimited! Learn how to use growth mindset to determine whether you become the person you want to be and whether you accomplish the things you value.

Track: Serving in and Leading Student Organizations
Every great team has a great leader but what qualities does a great leader have? In this workshop we learn qualities of being a great leader. How to develop and utilize these skills in a Student Organization or as an individual. And how to serve your peers, community and school as a new leader.

You Can Win Being You!: Many of us feel inadequate or undeserving of success because of an unreasonable degree of self consciousness (imposter syndrome). We must understand our purpose; purpose leads us to having vision, then actions. Let's begin the process of attracting the change we want in our lives by beginning to find our purpose!

Habits are powerful forces in our lives. They determine our level of effectiveness or ineffectiveness. The purpose of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is to help you lead your life in a truly effective way. They represent a proven process of personal and interpersonal growth that can have an immediate and lasting impact.

Track: Leadership Education and Community Leaders
Did you know that you could get a Degree in leadership? There are many opportunities to expand your knowledge and understanding of leadership through academic degree programs at Stanislaus State. Learn about the different undergraduate and graduate, specifically a Bachelors in Leadership Studies, Masters in Business Administration, Masters in Public Administration and Doctorate in Educational Leadership.

Track: Leading through Diversity and Inclusion
We talk about servant leadership, yet, how can we ensure that leaders understand what that truly entails, especially in regards to those populations they're here historically been marginalized? T.A.K.E. C.A.R.E. is an approach that makes this tangible for all leaders to serve ALL who they lead!

Track: Serving in and Leading Student Organizations
How do you sell your experience? People join people, not organizations. The pandemic didn't help anyone, let's just say it. Our members may feel out of practice communicating with our peers in a face-to-face environment and it seems to be a shock to the system. Walk away from this session with tangible takeaways and a clear plan for how to recruit the next generation of membership.

Dr. Amelia Herrera will talk about her journey after graduating from Stanislaus State. She will share how her experience as a Stan State student helped her to be successful in her life today.

We will wrap up Day One-Conference Day and talk about Day Two-Experiential Day. Details will be shared and T-Shirts will be handed out.
