Mission The mission of the Bookworms and Wordsmiths is to promote the study and production of literature and to provide a space for interested individuals to enjoy these and similar activities, like watching and critiquing plays, films, or television shows. The Bookworms and Wordsmiths strive to open students’ eyes to the benefits of English studies not only for the intellect but for the human spirit. We believe that studying and enjoying literature and practicing and honing writing skills leads to a happy and fulfilled life; that reading and writing excite human curiosity and nourish the imagination; and that extending what we’ve learned in the literature and writing classroom in a relaxed and open atmosphere can lead to constructive thinking, positive activity, and the eventual formation of a more just and equitable world. Bookworms and Wordsmiths also exists to promote and strengthen the institutional programs from which it branches: the undergraduate and graduate programs in the English Department. Note that while sustaining English and supporting its goals, Bookworms and Wordsmiths is its own group with broader concerns. Membership in the Bookworms and Wordsmiths is open to any and all who are enrolled as students on our campus, not only English majors, and we welcome both graduates and undergraduates. Students from all disciplines across the four colleges are urged to join us—after all, a business, nursing, or chemistry major may hunger for the nourishment that only art and literature can provide, and these students will enlarge the vision of those in the humanities with their perspectives from the spheres of business and the sciences. Bookworms and Wordsmiths will not only gather as its own creative and artistic community but will also be active in its orientation. We will implicate ourselves in all literary goings-on at Stanislaus State; from leading the way during banned books week to overseeing a fall pumpkin-carving and scary-story festival, look to see our members actively engaged in campus gatherings and communal poetry readings, literary events, and symposia.
Membership BenefitsThe enrolled CSU Stanislaus students who wish to join Bookworms and Wordsmiths will never worry about paying membership dues or providing additional requirements for admission to the organization. Of course, the benefits that members of the Bookworms and Wordsmiths can enjoy go beyond the material, as joining the club will allow them to nurture their imaginations and intellectual curiosities. Between partaking in activities that offer an exciting engagement with literary works of all kinds and participating in campus and community events with a focus on literature, members will not only engage their minds but also create unforgettable memories that will mark their college experience.
